The first Monday of May is the Superbowl of the fashion world.
I’m laying in bed, mercilessly refreshing Instagram and Twitter, admiring the extravagant ensembles designed for the world’s most elite.
To be invited to the Met gala is to be hand-picked by Anna Wintour, the legend herself. Tickets are $35,000 for a single seat. It’s the world’s most exclusive party to celebrate fashion and art, and us poor onlookers patiently wait to watch the night unfold via various social media timelines.
This year’s theme was Camp: Notes on Fashion. The theme was inspired by Susan Sontag’s 1964 essay, Notes on Camp, which describes “campy” as “love of the unnatural: of artifice and exaggeration.” Which means the extra, the better.
Lady Gaga, Harry Styles, and Serena Williams hosted this year’s event and were the first to arrive.
Harry Styles wore Gucci, while Serena Williams was dressed in Versace with matching Off-White x Nike sneakers.
Everyone was expecting Harry to go over the top, but I love the feminity of the blouse. Harry Styles is living proof that men can ignore traditional masculine rules and still be wanted by every single woman on planet earth. (Take notes, fellas.)
Lady Gaga showed off four different looks in fifteen minutes and used the red carpet as a stage. The Queen of Camp set the bar high.
Billy Porter took the cake for best ensemble and entrance as he arrived being carried by six shirtless men while wearing a 24-karat gold headpiece.
Other celebs who nailed the theme include Ryan Murphy, Celine Dion, RuPaul, Ezra Miller, Jared Leto, and Saoirse Ronana.
The Jenner sisters followed the theme in matching feather Versace dresses, although the rest of the family seemed to miss the memo. Kim looked amazing as she came through drippin’ diamonds, but was underdressed for the theme. Her after party look was more on point than what she actually wore to the gala.
Gigi Hadid wore an icy look from Michael Kors, while sister Bella matched Moschino designer Jeremy Scott in diamonds.
Katy Perry shone as a human chandelier in one of the most extra looks of the night.
Do yourself a favour and watch Zendaya transform into a Tommy Hilfigure version of Cinderella. She even went as far as leaving one of her shoes on the red carpet. Iconic.
And how could we forget Cardi B with her ruby nipple covers that cost $250,000 each?
Other notable outfits include Regina Hall, Naomi Campbell, Janelle Monáe, Emily Ratajkowski, Josephine Skriver, and Anderson .Paak.
Lily Collins took inspiration from Priscilla Presley on her wedding day:
Riverdale stars Madelaine Petsch, Lili Reinhart, and Cole Sprouse looked incredible. Madelaine attended her first Met in a Tinkerbell-inspired dress.
I was most disappointed by Miley Cyrus in Saint Laurent. Her dress was gorgeous, but I expected more from her since “campy” is perhaps the best word to describe her wild child era.
But most disappointing of all is the fact that Blake Lively and Rihanna decided not to attend this year… might as well cancel the entire event.
